Sticky freewheel - shocked by how many have the same issue!

Experiencing the sticky freewheel issue like so many others. I see suggestions of removing the seal to fix the issue, but I ride in a dusty location so removing a seal will likely lead to other problems. Not impressed.

Works for me

These hubs came with my wheel set on my Transition Relay which is a Fazua powered e-bike. Been riding this bike for over a year and the Race Face wheel set with these hubs have worked just fine. I'm currently debating about upgrading to the faster engagement Race Face Vault hub not because of having any problems with these wheels, but more of just wanting to try out the faster engagement.

I've taken these wheels on many rowdy rides to Las Vegas, San Luis Obispo, Lake Tahoe, Reno, and LA with no worries or concerns. I have approximately 2000 miles on these wheels with no care other than greasing the cassette once. No creeks, squeals, or problems have ever developed. The only thing that shows any wear on these wheels was chipping of the Race Face decals.

I have a spoke tensioner checking tool and had found the spoke tension to remain consistent. I will run them one more season then buy the Vault hub wheel set.

I consider myself a solid intermediate rider of chunk, tech, and flow as I leave gap jumps to others. Party on MTB world.

Freehub's a Drag

A tentative 2 stars. Same prob as reported by almost all other reviewers. Freehub drag increased after some rides to the point the cranks will spin while rolling, the chain throws a hissy fit over it, derailments, noise etc. The fix was a slight increase in the spacing (1 mm in my case) between the hub & freehub bearings to get the seal surfaces far enough away from each other that they don't cause a dysfunctional amount of drag. The upside is that the freehub is extremely easy to service. Just slides off, no tools, didn't even need to remove the cassette. IMO a nearly perfect hub ruined by a totally stupid defect still not fixed after years in production. Hubs are simple devices. There is a seemingly simple fix for this. Race Face has a generally good rep for customer service & that's been true in my personal experience, so a star for that & a star for the serviceability of the hub. If you're handy & can conjure up a lil' spacer if needed then IMO this can be a great hub but if not then you'll want to stay away, at least for now.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review for our Trace J-Bend Hub. We are sorry to hear that you have experienced issues with the freehub drag. We appreciate your detailed feedback and we are constantly working to improve our products.

We are glad to hear that you were able to find a solution by adjusting the spacing between the hub and freehub bearings. Our team is always available to assist with any technical issues and we are happy that our easy-to-service hub was able to make the process smoother for you.
