2007 UXC Trans Alp – Team Shannifer places 7th overall

The UXC is officially over for this year. Both Team 283 and Team Shannifer turned in magnificent performances in both the Trans Germany and the Trans Alp.

Team 283, the first co-ed single speed team to ride the Trans Germany, turned heads and helmets with their incredible stamina, ability to overcome the odds and their crazy sense of humour. Look for Bill and Rebecca to show up at other hard core XC races with nothing but single speed bikes and big smiles.

Team Shannifer, Hollywood’s great XC hope in Europe this year, did not disappoint. They were aggressive from the start and managed to place 7th overall in the mixed category – a huge result for Team Shannifer and for Race Face. Jennifer Hanks and Shannon Boffeli are both seasoned US cross country pros, however they readily admit that the Trans Alp was the hardest race they’d ever ridden.

You can watch all the team videos, read team profiles and check out both Team 283 and Team Shannifer in the Race Reports section - all at www.raceface.com/uxc.

In the weeks leading up to the Trans Germany and Trans Alp and each day throughout the races, visitors to the Race Face web site are able to learn more about our teams and follow their progress through daily updates by our support crew. Between flights, accommodations, and entry fees to the contest, the value of the UXC to the winners could exceed over $20,000 USD per team. Additionally, Race Face, through it's partnerships with Trans Germany, Trans Alp, and Bike Magazin Germany will document the UXC teams' story to the masses with extensive and exclusive media coverage.

Both Jennifer Hanks and her husband Shannon Boffeli are US cross country pros and are looking to make a big impact on the Trans Alp this year. Team Shannifer, in the tradition of Hollywood legends Bennifer and Brangelina, wanted to race the Trans Alp calling it a once in a lifetime opportunity. Both riders have a string of top finishes in their race history and are committed to putting Race Face onto the podium. Tenacious and determined, Shannifer will succeed where Hollywood has failed – to make Lycra cool again!

Berrecloth Takes 1st in Paris and wins the Qashqai grand prize!

The Claw takes first overall winning by one point over Paul Bas who confidently scooped up second. The largest crowd turnout ever roared as the two Race Face riders battled for the coveted top spot in this historic free ride event.

Our boys absolutely killed it in Paris at the Qashqai Big Air event, locking up three of the top five final spots. Qashqai is the invite only event that saw 15 of the world’s top riders tour 5 cities setting new standards in sick lines and crazy tricks. Race Face riders have dominated throughout the series never leaving the top three in the points race.

Rain kept the riders from putting on a show during the first day of the Big Air event, but day two was packed with action all day long for the Qashqai fans. The riders took advantage of the dry weather to impress the spectators with huge jumps and killer tricks, finalizing the five-event five discipline free ride series. The riders began the day early with a lengthy practice session to get acclimated to the big jumps. The course began with a super-sized roll-in, then a 10 meter (35ft.) jump, followed by another booter with a 7 meter (22ft.) gap. The course ended with a big quarter pipe wall for the riders to blast at the end of their runs.

All eyes were on Paul Bas and the Claw as they climbed to the top of the roll-in tower. Paul was the first out of the two to ride, and he started his run with a huge back flip over the 35ft gap and continued with a table one foot to x-up on the second. Paul blasted the quarter wall super high, over the heads of the cameramen on the deck of the ramp!

Bearclaw was next on the starting ramp and he knew that he would have to come up with something amazing if he was going to edge out Basagoitia for the overall win. He rolled into the Paris course to the sound of thousands of screaming fans and stretched out his trademark indian air on the first gap! He landed it perfect enough to hit the second booter with enough speed and control to spin a 360 one-footed table. Bearclaw wrapped his run by boosting out of the quarter wall with huge air.

It was obvious that the 50,000 Euros overall prize money was motivating both riders to perform in Paris. The final round of the last stop of the Qashqai tour attempted to push the level of riding even higher, but unfortunately most of the top riders crashed in their attempts to one-up their previous runs. Bearclaw attempted to 360 the first double and opposite 360 the next, but he over-rotated the opposite 360 and crashed in the dirt at the end of the course.

Paul Bas pushed his riding a little bit farther on the second run with a back flip, then a 1-foot table to late table on the second jump. Bearclaw’s first run was enough to unseat PB from his top overall position.

RACE FACE 2007 UXC Trans Germany – Race Reports are now online

The race is on! Team 283 is crankin’ through the countryside as we speak. The single speed duo is fully set up with Race Face components and they're psyched to be racing. After getting decked out in Race Face race duds and a quick tune up, Bill Fehr and Rebecca Tomaszewski are ready to rock. They’re bringin’ it North Carolina style to Deutschland!

Bill Fehr confesses in his blog that both he and Rebecca found the Euros very impressive with their lightweight full squish machines, however, he’s confident Team 283’s rigid single speed steeds will see them through. Team 283 is also quite at home in the mud and the rough terrain. They feel this may be an advantage as far as the technical riding sections of the race are concerned.

You can watch all the team videos, read team profiles and check out both Team 283 and Team Shannifer in the Race Reports section - all at www.raceface.com/uxc.

In the weeks leading up to the Trans Germany and Trans Alp and each day throughout the races, visitors to the Race Face web site will be able to learn more about our teams and follow their progress through daily updates by our support crew. Bas and Claw continue to lead in overall points at Qashqai - Cologne

As the top three qualifiers (Paul Basagoitia, Darren Berrecloth and Lance McDermott) rolled up to the start of the course, the crowd knew that they would be in for a spectacle, as each one of the top qualifiers was in the running for the overall title.

Paul Basagoitia started his first run with a 360 off the starting drop, then tabletopped on his way to the top of the roll-in for the box jump. He dropped in and as he went upside down, decided that this fifteen-foot box would be perfect for a flipwhip! Paul kept his run going with a 360 over the spine, footplant over the hitching post, and at the very end of his run, another perfect flair.

Darren Berrecloth was the next rider to go, and he followed Paul with a 360-table off the starting drop. Bearclaw landed a stretched out indian air superman on the box jump and proceeded to make his way back to the top of the Qashqai wallride. He took a deep breath and dropped into the roll-in, pedaling as hard as he possibly could towards the big quarter next to the starting drop. Bearclaw boosted the big quarter into a one handed table across the ramps, into a banked ramp. After landing his big gap, The Claw capped his run with an opposite 360 from the spine to the take off of the box jump.

The pressure was on for Lance McDermott, who qualified first and was the last rider to ride in the first round of finals. Lance flipped the first drop and pedaled across the top of the monster wall to get speed for the box jump. He continued his run with a perfect front flip over the huge box, into a backflip over the spine. Lance came back to the other spine and 360 tailtapped it on his way to the big quarter, which he tailwhipped. Lance handplanted the hitching post on his way back from that, then ended his amazing run with a 360-handplant on the spine.

The riders went right into the second round of finals after Lance’s first run, but most riders were quite happy with their first round, so they used their second run to dial in their lines or try some tricks that they didn’t do in their first run. For example, Bearclaw stuck a perfect 360-tailtap on the hitching post of the spine during his second round and Benny Korthaus landed the flair that he was attempting all weekend.

Paul Basgoitia’s second round was the most remarkable, as he began his run as normal on the top of the starting drop. The starting area was perched approximately forty feet above the ground, and Paul decided that he would try a new line from the start ramp. He skipped the step-down ramp altogether and bunnyhopped from the very top of the starting area into the transition of the big quarter that was next to the starting area. After landing it totally clean and riding away to continue an amazing run filled with flairs, tailwhips and 360’s, the technical event director Tim Spears radioed on the channel, asking all other production people, “Was anyone else shitting themselves before he went for that?”

At the end of the second round, the riders were quite curious to see if Paul’s crazy start was enough to take the win from riders like Lance and Bearclaw, who both put in some incredible runs. The final runs from all twelve riders were spectacular, but it was clear that Bearclaw, Lance McDermott and Paul Bas are hungry for the overall win and will stop at nothing to claim the first prize of 50,000 euros.

The judges deliberated for quite some time while the riders discussed their runs and high-fived each other for yet another insane contest with ground-breaking riding.

The podium for the Cologne stop of the Qashqai Urban Challenge consisted of Paul Basagoitia, Darren Berrecloth and Lance McDermott, as predicted by the riders and crowd alike. Third place was Paul Basagoitia, second was Darren Berrecloth, leaving the first place podium to Lance McDermott. Each rider has one win under their belt now, which brings the overall standings even closer.

RACE FACE riders continue to dominate at Qash Qai

Paul Basagoitia retains his lead in the overall points race as he takes first with a show stopping run in Madrid. Berrecloth follows with an amazing run as well, securing the top podium spots once again.  1st, 2nd and 3rd overall are still locked down by Race Face riders.

The Madrid event, part 3 in the Qashqai series, boasted some of the most creative riding ever! The crowd was totally blown away by the insane lines these riders were throwing down on the street course designed by pro street rider Jeff Lenosky. No one was able to unseat Paul Basagoitia, Darren Berrecloth and Adam Hauck from the top three positions. Each rider was trying to one-up the rider before him, doing more variations on similar lines or trying completely new lines.

Paul chose the left side line, which contained two small jumps into staircase landings. Paul 360’d the first jump and tail whipped the second jump. Paul followed these two jumps with a no-foot can over the box, wall tap on the wall ride into a stretched out superman on the box jump. He continued his assault on the course with a no-foot can transfer from the concrete block at the top of the stairs down to another staircase landing. Paul ended his run with a flip up the step-up, 360 on the step-down and a back flip table on the last jump. Riders continued to step-up the level of riding through the rest of the first round of finals. Even though Basagoitia’s first run was amazing, he felt the need to continue riding hard.

For Bas’ second run, he attempted to tail whip the stair section gap! The bike made it around, but Paul couldn’t land it and crashed on the concrete. When the top riders are throwing tricks as crazy as this, it’s obvious that the level of competition is running high! Darren Berrecloth was the last rider to go in the second round of the finals, and he knew that it would take some serious bangers to challenge Paul for the top spot. Bearclaw rolled down the start ramp, aiming at the left side (staircase jumps) and suddenly 360-transferred over to the landing ramp that was on the other side of the staircases! The crowd was going crazy for the Claw’s final run as he 360’ed the drop and superman Indian-aired the box jump. Bearclaw also launched on the back side of the box jump and did a tuck no-hander to flat, street style. He continued his run with a no-foot can on the stair section gap, 360’ed up the step-up and floated a huge 360 table on the last jump, much to the enjoyment of the thousands of people gathered in the area of the final obstacle.

Although it was super close, Paul Basagoitia would end up in first after the dust settled. The Claw took second, followed by Darren Pokoj in third. Bas wasted no time spraying the trophy girls with champagne.

Once selected - the teams will be flown to the races with all entry fees paid by Race Face. They will be outfitted in Race Face components and clothing and be given RaceFace team tech support throughout the multi day epic races.

In the weeks leading up to the Trans Germany and Trans Alp and each day throughout the races, visitors to the Race Face web site will be able to learn more about our teams and follow their progress through daily updates by our support crew.

Between flights, accommodations, and entry fees to the contest, the value of the UXC to the winners could exceed over $20,000 USD per team. Additionally, Race Face, through it's partnerships with Trans Germany, Trans Alp, and Bike Magazin Germany will document the UXC teams' story to the masses with extensive media coverage.

Race Face UXC 2007 Goes to Europe

RACE FACE 2007 Ultimate XC Challenge
Goes To Europe

Building on the success of past Ultimate XC Challenge (UXC) contests held in conjunction with the Trans Rockies race in Canada, Race Face is pleased to announce that the 2007 Ultimate XC Challenge is going to Europe!

In May 2007, the Race Face on line community will vote to send one team of two riders to compete in both the 2007 Trans Germany and TransAlp races with all expenses paid.

The UXC 2007 Europe calls for riders who have chain lube and fork oil in their blood, the unsung heroes of the singletrack, the guys without contracts who grind it out at their day jobs to ride on the weekends for the pure love of the sport... to represent Race Face in the 2007 Trans Germany and 2007 Trans Alp races.

Riders who believe they are up to the challenge should have a strong race resume, and, more importantly, a Really Good Story (RGS) as to why they should be chosen. The RGS portion needs to be submitted as a 90 second video explaining why they want to take part in one of two of the most epic, multi day XC stage races in the world. Submissions must be received by April 27, 2007.

Similar to the Ultimate Freeride Challenge (UFC), Race Face will take the top team submissions and post them online in May 2007 for their online community to view and vote for which team should ride for Race Face at the Trans Germany and TransAlp races. Winners of The UXC 2007 Trans Germany will be announced May 18. The winners of the UXC 2007 TransAlp will be announced June 2.

Once selected - the teams will be flown to the races with all entry fees paid by Race Face. They will be outfitted in Race Face components and clothing and be given RaceFace team tech support throughout the multi day epic races.

In the weeks leading up to the Trans Germany and TransAlps, and each day throughout the races, visitors to the Race Face web site will be able to learn more about our teams and follow their progress through daily updates by our support crew.

As our two teams undertake one of the most memorable adventures of their lives, what emotions will they experience? What sort of pain will they endure and what will they learn about themselves? We will soon find out, as the Race Face 2007 UXC goes to Europe.
