THE CLAW IS EVERYWHERE!

Hey all, just a quick note to let you all on what’s new at RaceFace. Darren Berrecloth is at it again. The Claw, RaceFace team rider and Freeride legend, pulled off another outstanding finish and placed 2nd at the Marzocchi Airdrome competition in Munich’s Olympic Hall. The event was held on a Supercross track and featured massive dirt jumps up to 35ft in length. The Claw pulled out a 360 on the first gap and nailed the second with a perfect 360-tailwhip to pedals – good enough to take the number two spot on the podium and a cheque for 2500 euros! Read the write-up on NSMB here.

The Claw can be seen taking mainstream media by storm as well. Recently featured in the Style section of this month’s Men’s Journal wearing a baby blue RaceFace Team T, Darren’s love of big air and a down to earth lifestyle are featured in the article. Check it out here >> Men’s Journal Article.

Happy holidays from everyone at RaceFace!

RACEFACE 2006 Team Results
- Race Face Riders and Teams Clean Up In 2006 -

November, 15th, 2006 Vancouver BC

2006 was another year to remember for the Race Face Freeride Team and our International Sponsored Teams. Paul Basagoitia and Darren “The Claw” Berrecloth continued their domination of the Slopestyle circuit. Kurt Sorge and Wayne Goss strengthened their resumes and showed us they are ready to take on the challenge of playing with the big boys. Our international race teams, Commencal and Kona; both had stellar seasons and finished with a Crowned World Cup Champion.

Race Face Freeride Team:

Paul started off the season with a 2nd place at the “Adidas Slopestyle” in Austria. He rounded out his competitive season be finishing 1st and 2nd at both “Redbull District Rides” and then was crowned the overall winner. In Las Vegas, at the world premiere of ”New World Disorder VII” (NWD VII), everyone witnessed Paul’s amazing talents again when he stomped out a jaw dropping segment.

Darren had his standard season, winning a couple of comps and nailing it in two videos, “NWD VII” and “ROAM.” He repeated his victory at the “Adidas Slopestyle” in Austria and “three-peated” his victories at the BIKE magazine’s “Monster Park.” To round out his amazing season, he hosted his own “Invitational Slopestyle” at Mount Washington, which is assured to become a mainstay on the international Slopestyle circuit.

Kurt, the youngest member of the Race Face team and winner of UFC IV in 2005, has quickly become a regular on the international Slopestyle circuit. There is a lot of buzz around this kid and his silky smooth style demands it. He has proven he can ride with the big boys and it will be very exciting to watch him progress and push the sport even further in 2007. Kurt - a young gun to watch out for!

After resigning Wayne this spring he came out charging and ready to impress. He worked hard prepping for his segment for “NWD VII,” but he took a pretty hard crash, which delayed his season. He was physically ready to compete by “Crankworx,” but mentally it wasn’t there for him. As the season progressed he began to regain form and competed in numerous smaller competitions to get ready for next year. Look out for Wayne in 2007!

Kona “Les Gets”:

Tracy Mosley had one of the most dominant female DH racing seasons on record. She was on the podium in almost every race she competed in. An absolutely amazing stretch of racing in 2006 and finished it off with the overall World Cup title. Way to go Tracy!

2005 DH World Champion Fabien Barel started the 2006 season in his usual dominant form. He won the Oceanic Cup in New Zealand and then started to roll along nicely before catching the injury bug. He suffered two major injuries, a severely lacerated arm while filming for NWD VII and then he cracked his foot during training runs. We know he will bounce back in 2007!

Kamil Tatarkovic is a young upstart who is beginning to leave his mark on the 4X racing scene. He continued to close the gap on the competition as the season rolled along and he got his first world cup podium finishing, 1st place, at the final event of the year. Look out for Kamil in 2007 - this kid is primed and ready to take it to the next level.

From the Kona XC team Neil Kindree, Kris Sneddon and Barry Wicks all had strong seasons. Neil was the Canada Cup overall winner and pulled of an amazing victory at one of the toughest races around “The Test of Metal”. Kris had a consistent year, even after battling mono in the off season and was up for the challenge at all the races. Barry pulled off some amazing results especially in the short track format and has been killing it on the Cylco Cross circuit this fall.

Commencal:

Cedric “The Entertainer” had his usual season. Top ten finishes in almost every DH and 4X event he competed in and another outstanding segment in the latest NWD video. But a highlight from his season has to be winning the Omnium title at the “Sea Otter Classic”, which is given to best overall rider from the 4X, Dual and DH events. Nothing but the norm here!

Remy Absalon and Romain Saladini both had strong season as well. Remy was crowned the European marathon DH Champion and one the Downieville marathon DH. Romain finished in the top 10 overall DH rankings and pulled off a 3rd at the avalanche cup in France. These guys are ready to take it to the next level so look out for them in 2007!

Race Face Re-Signs Paul Basagoitia
Race Face Components Inc., one of North America’s leading producers of high-end mountain bike components, apparel and protection is proud to announce the re-signing of Freeride Star Paul Basagoitia to its pro team. Signed until December 2009, Paul will continue to ride Race Face’s line of high performance componentry, clothing and protection.

“We’re ecstatic to have Paul on board for another three years” says Race Face president, Craig Pollack. “As one of Paul’s first sponsors in the mountain bike industry, we’ve had a long association with him and have seen him progress into one of the sport’s premiere athletes. We’re all looking forward to see what the future holds for Paul over the next few years and are very excited to be there to support him with a line of gear that has proven to be capable of withstanding his crazy riding style”.

Race Face originally signed Paul in Aug 2004, right after winning Crankworx Slopestyle, the first major mountain bike competition he entered. Paul is a mountain bike purist and his mad skills have all been honed on a 26” wheels. Repeating his Crankworx victory in 2005 legitimized his amazing mountain bike skills and since he has been a mainstay on the Freeride competition circuit. He has also penned long term deals with the Kona Clump Team.

Paul had an outstanding year again in 2006. He won the first Red Bull District Ride event in Catania, Italy and then proceeded to win the Overall Red Bull District Ride by finishing second at the Nuremberg, Germany event. Paul also had his fair share of podiums this year (3rd at Adidas Slopestyle, 3rd at Monster Park) and his name is a mainstay at all the competitions around the globe.

“I’m really excited to continue working and riding for Race Face for another three years” says Paul. “The gear is awesome! I like to push my riding to the absolute limits all the time and its good to know that Race Face products will take any punishment that I can dish out. That is what you need when you like to go big.”

“The Claw” Takes 2nd at His Signature Event
Mount Washington, British Columbia

Race Face team rider and freeride legend, Darren Bearclaw, pulled off another outstanding finish and placed 2nd in his own signature event, “The Bearclaw Slopestyle Invitational.” This event was amazing for its inaugural year and should easily become a mainstay on the international Slopestyle circuit.

Bearclaw built a course that was very technical and steep with only the best riders able to complete the line and fight for a position on the podium. The second stunt on the course, the “Hitching Post,” caused grief for many riders and really allowed for the cream of the field to rise to the top. All of the wooden stunts were built out of West Coast Cedar and Fir and made for some outstanding lines. The course was laden with cheering and astonished fans as the riders pulled off their crazy tricks.

Bearclaw and McCaul battled it out for the top spot of the day as they each put down some astonishing runs. They both pulled off a list of technical tricks including, tail whips, 360’s, Indian airs and super seaters. But at the end of the day it was Cam McCaul who stood on top of the field putting together the cleanest run of the day and walked away with the $4,000.

The event had many highlights, but there is one that has stood out in everyone’s mind. Jordie Lunn had been trying a new trick and was given ample opportunity to land it. In between the qualifiers and finals he was given one more. He rolled into the massive step up booter and launched into a trick that has never been landed or attempted on a mountain bike before, a backflip 360 (Inverted 720?). On this final attempt he landed it and stund the crowd, judges and other riders. It was unforgettable!

The field at the “The First Bearclaw Slopestyle Invitational” event was comprised of stars from the global freeride scene, including Cameron McCaul, Ben Boyko, Eric Porter, Ryder Kasprick, and Jordie Lunn meaning stiff competition for the athletes and eye-popping tricks for the spectators.

Race Face Sponsors Bearclaw Slopestyle Invitational
Vancouver, BC

Race Face Performance Products, one of North America’s leading producers of high performance mountain bike components, clothing and protection, is proud to announce that it has come on as a sponsor for Darren Bearclaw’s First Slopestyle Invitational being held at Mount Washington located in the Comox Valley, BC of Vancouver Island, on September 2.

The advantages of using Mount Washington as a site for a Slopestyle comp can be summed up in one word, “Lumber.” With the towering firs, cedars and hemlocks inundating the region, the Bearclaw Slopestyle Invitational will showcase some of the burliest log stunts to date.

A phenomenal prize purse is also up for grabs in The First Bearclaw Invitational Slopestyle, with a total cash award of over $9,000 up for grabs. The rider taking first place is expected to take home over $4,000, not bad for a first year event!

The riders' list for the invite only Slopestyle reads like a mountain biking dream team. Berrecloth will be competing along with many other biking heroes including the likes of Cam McCaul, Paul Basagoitia, Cam Zink, Islanders Ryder Kasprick and Jordie Lunn, Thomas Vanderham.

Darren Bearclaw “3-Peats” at Monster Park
Snowshoe Mountain, West Virginia

Race Face team rider and freeride legend, Darren Bearclaw, has stomped yet another competition and successfully defended his title at this years Bike Magazines “Monster Park.” This is the 3rd year in a row that Darren has won the “Monster Park” as he continues to prove that he is the man to beat on the global Slope Style competition circuit.

Bearclaw put together a flawless second run to take the victory by the slimmest of margins. He pulled off an Indian Air on the first table top, then he did a massive 360 step down off the ladder drop, he dialled in a tail whip near the bottom of the course and then he completely aired over the final stunt the “Green Monster” wall ride.

“How awesome is this,” said Bearclaw after his 3-Peat victory. “Winning Monster Park 3 years in row means a lot to me.”

Paul Basagoitia’s outstanding efforts gave him the third highest score of the competition, as he styled it with a variety of tricks including an x – up no footer, a massive backflip and a stylish tail whip. Another up and coming team rider from Race Face, Wayne Goss, cracked the top ten and finished in 9th place.

The field at the “Monster Park” event was comprised of stars from the global freeride scene, including Cameron McCaul, Jamie Goldman, Ben Boyko and Mike Kinrade, meaning stiff competition for the athletes and eye-popping tricks for the spectators.

The next major competition for the Race Face team riders is the Darren Bearclaw Invitational on Sep 2, at Mount Washington in Beautiful BC.

Although Paul didn’t win the day’s top prize, he did win the overall prize for having the highest overall score from the two “Red Bull District Ride” events.

Paul Basagoitia takes first in Catania at the first “Red Bull District Ride # 1”
Paul Basagoitia continues to impress this season as he rolled, back flipped, 360’d and 360 tail whipped into first place at the “Red Bull District Ride” in Catania. Paul was able to crank out a final run through the stunt and jump filled streets of Catania that none of the other competitors were able to match.

“What a place, what an event,” said Basagoitia after his victory. “To win in this type of venue and atmosphere really increases the stoke factor for me and I am pretty excited to pull it off.”

He really lit up the crowd when he pulled off one of his patented tail whips on the large stair case step down. Then on the final two dirt jumps of the course he went large pulling off a stylish lazy 360 and an amazing 360 tail whip. Both the competitors and the fans knew that he had it in the bag as all his peers gathered around him to give praise on his outstanding final run.

“Paul continues to raise the riding level” says Ken Maude Race Face’s marketing coordinator “he is tough to beat in these competitions and really steps it up when it matters, that type of ability is amazing and we are lucky to have him on our team.”

“UXC II” Round One Voting Begins July 1
Two months ago, on the hunt for riders worthy to represent Race Face in the 2006 TransRockies XC mountain bike race, Race Face put out the call for riders with chain grease and fork oil in their blood, the unsung heroes of the singletrack, and they have answered.

Now, it’s up to the online mountain bike community to choose which two teams will represent Race Face in one of the most grueling marathon mountain bike races in the world – with all expenses paid. Rider videos and bios of the first four teams will be online at www.raceface.com, and the first round of voting begins July 1.

Each team has its own unique story, and each its own inspiration. For the West Vancouver, BC, father and daughter team of John and Calindy Ramsden, Team Dark Horse Racing, it’s the bond of blood and the desire to share a unique life experience that motivates them to cross some of the most rugged terrain in North America on a mountain bike.

Eric Tremblay and Daniel Dube make up Team Suguenay. These guys are long time adventure racing partners from Chicoutimi, Quebec and have made the promise to do everything in their power to complete and be competitive in this years TransRockies. They also plan on bringing some much needed French flair to the UXC II with their exuberant personalities.

Boise, Idaho’s Jon Gould and Davey Moore of Team Tamarack Race Face bring a long history of XC and endurance race experience; they are mentally and physically prepared to traverse the grand landscape of the Trans Rockies. They are a real threat in the 80+ division and have a strong chance to win their category.

Bonded by similar medical conditions Robert Hill and John O’Shaughnessy, of Vancouver and Victoria, BC form Team I.D.E.A.S (Inflammatory Bowel Disease Education and Awareness Society), plan to ride to raise awareness for people who suffer from Crohns disease. Robert was diagnosed with Crohns disease at the age of 23, while John survived a battle with cancer at the age of 8 months and both of them are an inspiration to us all. Now they are prepared for their next life challenge, the Trans Rockies

Online community members will have one week to submit their vote. The winning team will be the first of two teams who will represent Race Face at the 2006 TransRockies. Next week, we’ll post another four videos and once again, our online community will be given the chance to select our second team.

Race Face’s Ultimate XC Challenge II is an online, peer-judged contest, in a format similar to Race Face’s wildly successful Ultimate Freeride Challenge (UFC). Darren Bearclaw and Paul Basagoitia take first and second at third annual “Adidas Slopestyle
Saalbach Hinterglemm, Austria

Race Face team rider and freeride legend, Darren Bearclaw has pulled out all the stops again at this years Adidas Slopestyle, defending his title and collecting a check for 4,000 euros after thrilling the crowd by launching One-Footers, 360s, No Foot Can Cans and his trademark Superman Seat Grabs.

Bearclaw’s outstanding efforts earned him the highest overall score of the competition as he aired it out over the course’s combination of big mountain drops, dirt jumps and style elements, including a giant yellow dump truck and slanted wallrides.

“I’m stoked man,” said Bearclaw after his victory. “To win the Slopestyle 2 years in a row with such a top-class field means a lot to me.”

Paul Basagoitia’s labours gave him the second highest overall score of the competition and a check for 3,000 euros, as he styled it with a variety of tricks including Backflips, 360s, Barrel Roles and Super Man Seat Grabs. Paul is set to have another stand out year and challenge Bearclaw throughout all the major events of this season.

The field at the third Adidas Slopestyle event was comprised of all the stars from the global freeride scene, including Cedric Gracia, Aaron Chase, Geoff Gulevich and Kyle Strait, meaning stiff competition for the athletes and jaw-dropping tricks for the spectators.

The next major competition for the Race Face team riders is the Red Bull District Ride # 1 on July 14 - 16, at Catania in Italy.

Darren Berrecloth Featured on Discovery Channel’s TV Show “Stunt Junkies”
Race Face Components Inc., one of North Americas leading producers of high-end mountain bike components and apparel, is proud to announce that Darren “The Claw” Berrecloth was one of the first featured athletes on Discovery Channel’s TV show “Stunt Junkies”. Darren continues to push the boundaries of the sport he is so passionate about and continues to move freeride mountain biking into the mainstream.

This type of publicity isn’t new for “The Claw.” Television shows like Stunt Junkies are just one of the many things Darren has done to help bring the incredible sport of freeride mountain biking to the masses. In 2004, Outside Magazine named Bear Claw one of the top “25 Coolest People Now” joined by cycling icon, 7 times Tour de France Champion, Lance Armstrong.

The TV show Stunt Junkies focuses on adrenaline athletes and how they merge engineering and physics to pull off extreme feats. “The Claw” fits the mould as the combination of his amazing riding ability, and the precision built equipment he rides, allows him to pull off some of the sickest jumps and lines of any rider on the globe. The team at Race Face is proud to provide Darren with the right equipment he needs to be successful when going big like he did in his Stunt Junkies episode.

“Darren continues to impress us” says Ken Maude Race Face’s marketing coordinator “not only with his professionalism as a rider, but with his professionalism with the media. He continues to get amazing exposure for his sponsors and helps to increase the exposure for freeride mountain biking, truly awesome.”

Race Face was first to sign Darren when he was a relatively unknown, in June 2002, after he won his first mountain bike competition he competed in. In the following years Darren has firmly planted his tire marks on the mountain bike industry, becoming a rider known for his cutting edge stunts and skills that are unparallel.

Race Face Signs the Claw for Three More Years
Race Face Components Inc., one of North Americas leading producers of high-end mountain bike components and apparel, is proud to announce the Re-Signing of Freeride phenom, Darren Berrecloth to its pro team. Signed until December 2008, Darren will continue to ride Race Face’s line of high performance componentry and clothing.

“We’re thrilled to be working with Darren for another three years” says Race Face president, Craig Pollack. “As Darren’s first sponsor in the mountain bike industry, we’ve had a very long association with him and have watched him progress into one of the sport’s premiere riders. We’re all looking forward to see what the future holds for Darren over the next few years and are very excited to be there to support him with a line of gear that has proven capable of withstanding his abusive riding style”.

Race Face first signed Darren in June 2002, when he was relatively unknown in the mountain bike industry. Coming from a competitive freestyle BMX background, Darren was the first rider to showcase BMX moves on big mountain lines. A third place finish in the 2002 Redbull Rampage officially put him on the industry’s who’s who list and Darren soon penned deals with Specialized, Manitou and Adidas Eyewear.

Darren’s list of accomplishments within the mountain bike industry continues to grow with each passing year. He consistently podiums at Freeride/Slopestyle comps, has standout segments in the industry’s best mountain bike films and has been featured in countless magazines including being named one of the “25 Coolest People Now” by Outside Magazine. Darren has been named BIKE magazine Rider of the Year two years in a row and has been nominated for the prestigious Laureus award for Outstanding Alternative Sportsperson for 2005. Most recently, Darren has been featured in a half hour episode of “Stunt Junkies” – a new television series which will premiere on the Discovery Channel in February.

“I’m stoked to be riding for Race Face for another three years” says Darren. “The quality of the gear is awesome. I ride really hard and it’s really nice not having to worry about whether or not your components or clothing is gonna hold up. I haven’t had any problems in the past four years I’ve been with Race Face and I’m really looking forward to the next three.”

In addition to riding, Darren will be pulling double duty at Race Face, designing signature clothing items. Darren is currently working on a signature glove with future plans for jerseys, shorts and pants. This is an exciting project and will continue to lay Darren’s stamp on the industry as an innovator and leader within the sport. Look out for Darren’s new signature items in Race Face’s Spring/Summer 2007 line.
